English Homework
20 days of literature, letters, grammar & creative writing.
Day 1 โ Letter to the Editor (road repair)
Day 2 โ Exploring Literary Devices
1. Dust of Snow
- Alliteration: "Has given my heart" and "saved some part" repeat consonant sounds for rhythm.
- Enjambment: The poem is a single continuous sentence running across stanzas, showing a sudden, smooth mood shift.
- Irony: Using a crow and a hemlock tree โ traditional symbols of bad luck โ to bring joy.
2. Fire and Ice
- Imagery: Vivid descriptions of the world ending in fire or ice appeal to extreme senses of heat and cold.
- Anaphora: Repeating "Some say" in the first two lines emphasizes contrasting popular beliefs.
- Personification: Desires (fire) and hatred (ice) are given the power to destroy the world.
Day 3 โ Letter to the Editor (road safety)
Day 4 โ Lencho's Letter to God
1. Lencho's Letter
2. God's Response
Day 5 โ A Triumph of Surgery (Tricki)
- Tricki's health: Tricki fell ill because Mrs. Pumphrey overfed him with chocolates, cakes, and cod-liver oil out of blind love, while giving him no exercise.
- Lesson for owners: Pet owners must learn that overindulgence hurts animals. "Loving responsibly" means prioritizing health, diet, and regular exercise.
- Kindness over confrontation: Dr. Herriot chose tact over anger and gently convinced her to hospitalize Tricki, solving the issue without conflict.
- Value learned: Patience and professional tact work much better than harsh arguments when handling difficult situations.
Day 6 โ A Letter to God (analysis)
- Impact of faith: Lencho's pure faith shows that absolute belief inspires kindness in others. Strangers step up and help anonymously.
- Lencho's blame: Lencho called the staff a "bunch of crooks" because he trusted God completely and assumed the workers stole the missing thirty pesos.
- Value learned: Avoid blind assumptions. A lack of trust and perspective can make us blind to the genuine kindness of strangers.
Day 7โ10 โ Tenses in Daily Life
- Present Simple: I wake up at 6:00 AM daily. I revise my notes, eat breakfast, and build mini electronics kits.
- Past Simple: In 1947, India gained independence. The nation celebrated as Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his famous midnight speech.
- Future Simple: Next winter, my family will visit Shimla. We will travel by train and explore snow-covered hills.
- Present Continuous: Right now, I am sitting at my desk writing my assignments while my brother listens to music.
- Past Continuous: Yesterday at 5:00 PM, it was raining heavily. I was fixing a loose PC cable while waiting.
Day 11 โ Dust of Snow (appreciation)
- Appreciating small moments: Ordinary natural events can instantly change our perspective, lift our heavy spirits, and save a bad day.
- Optimism: A crow and a hemlock tree are symbols of gloom, yet they bring joy to the poet. Staying optimistic helps find comfort in unexpected places.
Day 12 โ Helping the Needy
I want to help underprivileged children in my locality by running free weekend tutoring classes at our community center. Many kids living nearby lack guidance, textbooks, and basic study facilities. By sharing my old notes and teaching core subjects, I can help them improve.
I want to do this because true human goodness lies in lifting others up. Helping them succeed gives me genuine happiness and a clear sense of purpose.
Day 13 โ Analytical Paragraph & Poetry Analysis
1. Friendship in a movie (3 Idiots): The movie 3 Idiots shows that true friendship is about supporting each other's dreams, not competing. Rancho pushes Farhan and Raju to pursue their passions, while they risk their futures to help him. Real friends accept your flaws, challenge you to grow, and stand by you during crises.
2. A Tiger in the Zoo (Imagery): Leslie Norris uses visual imagery to contrast captivity with freedom. Phrases like "locked in a concrete cell" and "few steps of his cage" depict suffocating restriction. The imagery of "quiet rage" and "velvet pads" emphasizes suppressed anger, capturing the sadness of a wild animal trapped in a human world.
Vocabulary: Elucidate ยท Exacerbate ยท Fortuitous ยท Juxtapose ยท Quintessential
Day 14 โ Letter & Analytical Paragraph
Foreshadowing in mystery novels: Foreshadowing builds tension and keeps readers hooked. Authors drop subtle clues, tense conversations, or weather changes early on to hint at future events without ruining the plot. This prepares the reader's mind for the final twist, making the climax feel earned and logical.
Vocabulary: Ineffable ยท Mellifluous ยท Obfuscate ยท Panacea ยท Vehement
Day 15 โ Lencho's Second Letter & Conversation
Conversation:
- Postmaster: Look at this, Lencho sent a second letter! He knows the truth now.
- Clerk: Really? What does he say, sir?
- Postmaster: He apologized for calling us thieves and thanked us deeply for saving his family.
- Clerk: I am glad our little sacrifice kept his faith alive and actually helped him.
Day 16 โ Fire and Ice (destruction & message)
1. Destruction in Fire and Ice: The poet talks about both physical and emotional destruction. It implies the wiping out of all life and human civilization due to uncontrolled human vices like greed (fire) and cold hatred (ice).
2. Underlying message: A warning against self-destruction. The poem teaches that if we do not control our fiery desires and cold, insensitive hatred toward each other, our emotions will destroy the world.
Day 17 โ Project: Character Diary (The Black Aeroplane)
Day 18 โ Case Study: Tricki's Recovery
- Patient's Condition: Tricki was dangerously obese, listless, and vomiting due to extreme overfeeding.
- Diagnosis & Plan: Dr. Herriot diagnosed illness from overindulgence. Plan: zero medicine, strict diet, and separation from his owner.
- Surgical Procedure: No surgery was performed; he was kept at the clinic.
- Post-operative Care: Two days on a water-only diet, followed by measured meals and free play with other dogs for exercise.
- Doctor's Skills: Dr. Herriot showed immense practical wisdom. He relied entirely on common-sense lifestyle changes to heal the pet.
Day 19 โ Article: International Yoga Day
International Yoga Day is celebrated globally on June 21st to spread awareness about yoga. Originating in ancient India, yoga is a holistic practice that unites the mind, body, and breath.
Regular practice of yoga postures and meditation helps students reduce exam stress, improves flexibility, and boosts mental concentration. In today's fast-paced digital world, practicing yoga daily ensures mental peace and healthy discipline.
Day 20 โ My Favourite Task
My favourite task was creating the Character Diary entry for the pilot of the "Black Aeroplane." This assignment let me step into the character's shoes and feel his relief firsthand. It helped me grow as a writer by pushing me to express deep human emotions like fear and mystery, rather than just summarizing a textbook chapter.
